PADDY, MAIZE PRODUCTION UP

Kathmandu, 8 Dec.: Paddy and maize production increased in the fiscal year 2010/.11 following several years of bad crops contributing significantly to gross domestic product (GDP) growth amid a lackluster economic performance, the Agriculture Ministry said.
The country produced 4.4 million tons of paddy, the country’s staple crop compared to 4.02 million tons the previous year—a 11 percent increase despite five percent of less land brought under cultivation.
GDP growth because of increased paddy production is estimated at 7.5 percent.
Maize production increased 11.45 percent to 2.67 million tons.
Buckwheat production stood at 10,304 tons.
