ATTEMPT TO STRENGTHEN LEFT-DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE

Kathmandu, 8 Jan.: NC and 14 small at a meeting sponsored by NC decided to ‘strengthen a left-democratic front’ Rashtriay Janaskahti Party Co-chairman Dr. Prakash Chanda Lohini said Saturday.
UML, leading the present coalition, wasn’t present at the meeting convened by the NC which sought support for Vice-president and parliamentary party leader Ram Chandra Paudel, the sole candidate for prime minister.
The parties formed a three-member talks team to talk with UML to get support for the alliance.
CP Mainali, Dr.Lohini and Chandra Deb Joshi, representatives of three parties, are members of the talks team.
Paudel is the only remaining candidate in the election for prime minister to replace Madhav Kumar Nepal who resigned 30 June 2010.
UML has decided to vote against the candidacy of Paudel.
Parties can’t stay in voting this time as in the past following a supreme court ruling.
Should UML vote against Paudel’s candidacy, his candidature will be defeated by majority in the 598-member parliament.
But his replacement hasn’t been elected even in 16 rounds of parliamentary vote which is now likely to be held 12 January.
Speaker Subash Nemwang said Saturday he’ll adopt a new process in next week’s vote in again inconclusive.
UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal said Friday he’s he also a candidate to replace Nepal.
NC sought the support of parties Friday to bring Maoist combatants under a special committee headed by the prime minister as UNMIN prepares toleave 15 January.
Parliament’s winter session begins Sunday.
Fouteen parties also said ‘serious attention’ was drawn to Karin Landgren’s statement to the UN security council Wednesday.
She returns Sunday to close down the mission 15 January.
