INDIAN NATIONAL CHARGED FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF WEAPONS

JASJEET SINGH REMANDED TO 15-DAY CONSTODY

Kathmandu, 11 March: Indian national Jasjeet Singh who failed to assassinate Yunis Ansari, chairman of a television network, inside high security central jail Thursday in
the capital has been remanded to 15-day custody for investigation Friday.
He has been charged for possession of illegal arms; no attempt murder charge has been registered.
Ansari entered the prison with a British revolver hidden beneath undergarments to got entry into jail on the pretext of meeting French serial killer Charles Shobraj for murdering an American and Canadian tourist at the height of the hippie movement in the late 1960’s.
Fifty policemen deployed around the prison were transferred Friday and three were suspended Thursday.
Opponents of newly elected Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal took the opportunity to ridicule and criticize the government.
“Nepal’s image has been defamed. The shooting inside the prison reflects serious weakness of security,” said NC parliamentary leader Ram Chandra Paudel.
‘The incident shows the seriousness of the security situation in the country,” NC leader D Ram Sharan Mahat said.
Khanal and his government came under direct attack from his party colleague KP Oli who opposes a UML-Maoist coalition.
Oli said the incident happened because there was no home minister –a position claimed both by UML and Maoists.
But Singh attempted to shoot dead Ansari more than one year ago when there was a home minister and instead was involved in another deadly shooting of media tycoon Jamin Shah.
‘The country’s situation is pitiable,” Oli said.
Salim Ansari, father of Yunis and a minister in the royal regime, blamed Indian government security agencies for the attempted murder.
Ansari is serving prison charge for alleged involvement in dealings in fake Indian currency notes and drugs.
There were demonstrations in the capital against the attempted murder.
No government has been forthcoming.
