SPEAKER ASKS ONE OF TWO PARTIES TO WITHDRAW FROM PM RACE; UPDATE OF PM ELECTION
Kathmandu, 27 Aug.: Speaker Subash Nemwang Saturday asked one of two parties--Maoists and NC---
to withdraw from Sunday’s contest for prime minister.
He urged election of a consensus candidate for peace and constitution drafting.
A 10-day presidential deadline for a consensus vote couldn’t be met by parties.
Meanwhile, chiefs of five parties of a Madeshbadi front have been empowered to choose the front’s candidate for Sunday’s PM election.
Parties couldn’t come to a decision Saturday.

OUTGOING PM KHANAL THANKS OFFICIALS, SECURITY CHIEFS FOR COOPERATION.
Kathmandu, 27 Aug.: Outgoing Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal at a farewell meeting Saturday thanked government officials, chiefs of security agencies, aides, politicians and others for cooperation during his seven-month tenure.
He thanked them at a meeting at his official residence.
Parliamentary election is being held Sunday to elect his successor.
Khanal said he’ll extend all cooperation to his successor.

NEW INDIAN AMBASSADOR MEETS MADHAV KUMAR NEPAL
Kathmandu, 27 Aug.: In one of his first meetings with politicians, Indian Ambassador Jayant Prasad held discussions with former Prime Minister and UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal at the latter’s residence Saturday.
Prasad formally assumed office Friday by presenting his credentials to President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav Friday.
Nepal has been playing a leading role in stopping UML from developing close ties with Maoists.

LIGHTNING KILLS 2, INJURES SIX IN UDAIPUR
Kathmandu, 27 Aug.: Lightning overnight killed two persons and injured six others at Rajadeep in Udaipur overnight.
A mother and daughter were killed by the lightning—a common natural disaster during monsoon.
