VIEWS OF PARTY LEADERS ON NEPAL-INDIA TIES
Kathmandu, 25 Jan.: Participants of an interaction here on Wednesday said that relations between Nepal and India was multidimensional and stressed on the need for developing it in a balanced way based on the proximity between the two neighbours, RSS reports.

Speaking at the interaction organised by Reporters Club of Nepal, they said the relations should be redefined as per the need of the hours.

At times it is still felt that India looks upon Nepal with the British colonialist attitude though two major political parties— the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal had come in to existence from India and the southern neighbor has played an important role for the establishment of democracy and provided crucial support during the various democratic movements, they said.

On the occasion, politburo member of the Unified CPN-Maoist Ram Karki said we should take the support of the two economically prosperous neighbors to conclude the task of peace and constitution writing process.

We first should identify our national interest and decide the kind of relations we should maintain with our neighbours, he added.

Similarly, central member of the Nepali Congress, Dr Narayan Khadka described the relations between Nepal and India as extensive and multi-dimensional.

A common perspective of Nepal and Nepalis on a foreign policy that would best suit to Nepal was yet to be decided, he said, adding that our foreign policy is guided on party-based policy.

CPN-UML leader Pradip Gyawali said there were both positive and negative aspects in the relations between Nepal and India. The relations are traditional, and like that between a big brother and small brother, he added.

Moreover, Mr Gyawali said the past relations based especially on culture needs to be changed and balance it with the neighbours as per the changed context.
