DRIVE AGAINST SMUGGLED VEHICLES
Kathmandu, 16 Feb.: Police have launched a campaign against the use of vehicles smuggled from India in the district, Rabindra Upreti writes in The Kathmandu Post from Mohottari..
Security personnel seized more than two dozen such vehicles from Gaushala, Sripur, Kisannagar and Jaleshwor in past one month alone and submitted them to the Jaleshwor Customs Office.
It is said that such vehicles are smuggled from India, taking advantage of the open border and also in the name of marriage and religious festivals.
According to the Armed Police Force (APF), such smuggled vehicles are found to be used in smuggling goods and contraband drugs and carrying out criminal activities.
Superintendent of Police Pawan Kumar Kharel said smuggled vehicles , in some cases, are found to be used after replacing Indian number plates with the Nepali ones. He said most of such vehicles are motorcycles.
Police said mafias have been involved in smuggling such vehicles, taking advantage of Nepali law that allows vehicles bearing Indian number plates ply in limited area within Nepal.
APF's Superintendent of Police Kumar Neupane said smuggled vehicles have become their headache.
Chief of the Customs Office, Lila Sharma, said misuse of the provision to allow Indian vehicles to enter Nepal for one day has made the matter worse.
