ARCHIVES SEEKS KEYS FROM FOREIGN MINISTRY FOR
ACCESS TO DOCUMENTS

Kathmandu, 18 Aug.: National Archives (NA) has drawn the attention of Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) to make available the cabin key to hundreds of thousands of historical documents so as to give researchers and the public access to
significant papers, The Himalayan Times reports..

After MoFA shifted from Shital Niwas to Narayanhiti Palace Secretariat in early 2009, it had handed over the documents packed in at least 1,000 sacks to NA, but kept the key of the cabin where the documents are kept safe.

“Everyday, we face pressure from researchers and the public seeking access to the documents,” Prakash Darnal, Chief at NA told THT. “But we haven’t been able to help because MoFA has the key of the cabin.” The documents mostly include ancient maps of Nepal, and various treaties, agreements, and correspondences with Tibet, China and British East India Company and the government in India. It spans a period from the Malla era to the fall of Rana regime in 1951.

MoFA agreed to provide the key once a detailed inventory was made and which documents the public access and which were sensitive was decided.

A high level team was even formed in 2010 to conduct the inventory and categorise documents as for ‘the public, and to be kept secret.’
