If PM election inconclusive Wednesday; second round voting Friday (DEVELOPING STORY)
Kathmandu, 21 July: Second round of voting for prime minister will be held Friday if the first round in inconclusive Wednesday.
This was decided at a meeting of parliament’s business advisory committee Wednesday.
Wednesday’s parliament meet will start at two in the afternoon [08.15 GMT].
Three candidates have filed nominations for election.
Candidates are still canvassing support hours before the vote begins.
Even if Maoists decide to support Jhalanath Khanal’s candidacy at the last moment, the UML chairman won’t get the required two-third 401 majority vote.
UML and Maoists have altogether 345 votes.
The strength is enough to form a majority government of two communist parties not enough to meet the 401-seat rider put by UML.
The rider has no constitutional validity to form a majority government after failure to form a consensus government as first prescribed by the president.
