ALERT AGAINST DENGUE

Kathmandu, 22 Mach: - The deadly dengue disease claimed lives last year, but the government has no any new preparation to prevent it in the future, The Rising Nepal reports..
Medics have made it clear that if the government did not take a strong prevention measure, the disease may appear and spread again.
In the absence of preparedness, dengue developed as an epidemic last year.
Organizing a press conference in Kathmandu Monday, Chitwan based doctors urged the Ministry of Health and Population to do something for dengue prevention immediately.
Associate Prof. of Chitwan Medical College Dr. Shital Adhikari said there was a possibility of dengue infection through out the year because of Nepal’s climatic conditions.
Dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) are caused by one of four closely related, but antigenically distinct, virus serotypes (DEN-1, DEN-2, DEN-3, and DEN-4). However, there is no formal assessment as to what type of dengue had spread in Nepal.
Although there is no exact record, around 800 people last year were detected with dengue in Chitwan.
Since mid-July to December 2010, dengue had created a havoc and it was traced from Chitwan. Saying that one or two people with dengue infection visited Chitwan Medical College this year weekly, Dr. Adhikari said that dengue might have started appearing. However, as per the rule, in case there were fewer than six patients, the cases were not allowed be public, he added.
Dr. Harishchandra Neupane, managing director of the medical college, said that as many problems surfaced in the fight against dengue in Chitwan last year, the centre should take the initiative to contain it now.
In 2004, dengue was detected in Chitwan for the first time in Nepal. In 2006, it took epidemic form in nine Terai districts. Similarly, dengue virus was found in more than 30 districts last year, including hilly districts like Dhading and Tahanu.
The trend of dengue spread proved that it was spreading rapidly and it was becoming epidemic in more districts, Dr. Neupane said.
According to the World Health Organization, around 50 million people suffer from dengue every year across the world and around 2.5 billion people are under the risk of the disease.
Dengue is transmitted by a mosquito bite. Unlike other mosquitoes which breed in dirty water, dengue transmitting mosquitoes breed in clean and stagnant water, doctors said.
Medics suggested avoiding mosquito bites during the day time.
There was no specific treatment method for dengue fever and it could be cured simply. However, if the disease turned into dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome there may be a high chance of death. DHF is a more severe form of dengue. It can be fatal if unrecognized and not properly treated.
According to WHO, over the last 10-15 years DF/DHF has become a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children in the South East Asia Region, following diarrhoeal disease and acute respiratory infections.
