STUDY TEAM SENT AMID DEATH REPORTS AFTER TAKING MEDICINE TO CURB ELEPHANTIASIS

Kathmandu, 1 April: A two-member health team has been sent by government to Banke in the far-West after reports in five deaths in Banke and other districts after free medicine was distributed this week by government under a campaign to control elephantiasis.
The campaign this month covered 36 of 75 districts, including three in the Valley.
Many refused to take the medicine.
Dozens have fallen sick after taking the free medicine.
Government reaction hasn’t come as yet.

CENTRAL BANK TO FILE CASE IN US COURT FOR MONEY RECOVERY

Kathmandu, 1 April: The Nepal Rashtra Bank (NRB) is all set to file a case in the US District Court for Southeast district of New York against the debiting of $1 million from the account with the Standard Chartered Bank’s New York branch, The Kathmandu Post reports.
The same court had ordered the payment of the amount to Ashim Khatri Chetri, chairman Tarala International, who had filed case at the court after the government froze US$1 million sent by Tarala to Chinese national Wu Lixang- on suspicion of money laundering.
The central bank board Thursday decided to file a case seek in an order to revoke the decision, a NRB board member said.
‘Probably the case will be filed Friday,” the source said.
‘Standard Chartered Bank here informed us that the amount has only been debited from NRB’s account, but not withdrawn,” said the NRB official.

CHINESE MOTOR RALLY ARRIVING MONDAY

Kathmandu, 1 April: Jonway Motor Rally, sponsored by China’s Jonway Auto Company, will arrive from Lhasa in Kathmandu Monday to promote Nepal Tourism Year-1011.
Twenty Chinese journalists are covering the rally that will also drive to Narayanghad, Sauraha and Pokhara.
