PM KHANAL TO ATTEND INFORMAL MEET IN TURKEY SUNDAY

Kathmandu, 8 May: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal will address an informal meeting of the least developed countries in Istanbul, Turkey Sunday.
The meeting will finalize the agenda of the conference.
Khanal, on his first foreign tour, is leading the Nepali delegation to the conference.
A formal session of the 48-nation meet begins Monday.

SPECIAL COMMITTEE TASK FORCE MEET

Kathmandu, 8 May: A meeting of a four-member task force of the special committee for the integration, resettlement and supervision of 19,000 plus former Maoist combatants meets Sunday.
The task force with leaders of four parties—Maoists, NC, UML and MJFN—formed more than six weeks ago hasn’t developed a modality and schedule for integration mandated by the committee headed by the prime minister.
Four alternatives have been suggested.
The last meeting of the special committee asked for a modality by 15 May.
The suggestions will be submitted to the special committee.

Kathmandu, 8 May: Maoist Vice-chairman Narayan Kazi Shrstha has been hospitalized at Bansbari for five days with backache related to spondylitis.
“Doctors asked him to undergo surgery,” said his aide Shital Kazi Shrestha.

PM’S TURKEY VISIT TURNING CONTROVERSIAL

Kathmandu, 8 May: Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal has fooled all leaving for Istanbul, Turkey, Friday night for 10 days while proclaiming to all it was a six-day visit, Chandra Shekhar Adhikari writes in Annapurna Post.
President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and constituent assembly Chairman Subash Nemwang even asked him not to proceed on a foreign visit as time draws near for the end of assembly’s tenure.
The prime minister’s office had said he would leave Saturday and return Thursday.
But the visit was extended to 10 days through a cabinet meeting hurriedly convened only Friday morning,
The meeting of least developed countries begins only Monday and ends Thursday.
‘The prime minister will be holding only informal meetings after Monday. The main meeting is with the UN secretary-general. Other meetings aren’t that important,” an official said.
‘There was no need for the prime minister to go. The long stay is to avoid criticism on peace and the constitution. How will the nation get a resolution when the state has one requirement and the premier’s attention is diverted?” asked former Foreign Minister Bhek Bahadur Thapa.
Before leaving, Khanal said he could shorten his visit, if necessary.

NEW HIGH WITH EVEREST TWEET

Kathmandu, 8 May: A renowned British climber has taken Twitter to a new high firing off the first ‘tweet’ from the peak of the world’s tallest mountain, Reuters reports from San Francisco.
Kenton Cool used the terse text message to plug a slick new Galaxy SII smartphone made by Samsung, the South Korean consumer electronics giant that backed the sixth ascent to the top of Mount Everest.
“Everest summit no 9! 1st tweet from top of thw world thanks to a weak 3G signal & the awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 handset,” the mountaineer said in a tweet sent Thursday.
Nepal telecom carrier Ncell installed a mobile signal receiver at the base of Everest last yea, but it had been unclear whether its range extended to the peak.
A blog post at Cool’s website dream-guides.com proclaimed the Samsung Everest climb a success and promised more details as Cool made his way back down.
