FORMER IGP GURUNG PERSONALLY APPEARS BEFORE SPECIAL COURT

FORMER IGP HEM BAHADUR GURUNG IN SPECIAL COURT

Kathmandu, 14 July: Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hem Bahadur Gurung appeared on Thursday appeared personally at a special court and recorded his statement.
He is the first of three IGPs charged in the Rs.280 million.
Two other police officers appeared at the court to defend charges filed by CIAA; one officer has been freed on bail and another was sent to jail after paying a Rs.10 million bail.
Thirty-four police officers have been charged.

ONE INJURED IN ITAHARI SHOOTIN

Kathmandu, 14 July: Rajendra Rai was shot and injured along 1hangrakhola, Itahari Thursday.

He survived and is undergoing treatment for two bullet injuries.

Kathmandu, 14 July: Prime Minister Jhala Nath Khanal on Thursday said that the media sector has a great role for bringing about social change, RSS reports..
Inaugurating a meeting Asian Broadcasting Union (ABU) News Group in the Capital on Thursday, Prime Minister Khanal said televisions were an effective means to ensure access of illiterate people to information and community in the country.
Hailing the contributions of press during the political change in 2061/062, he thanked ABU for its support to Nepal through its broadcasting service. ABU is the umbrella organisation of the national broadcasters of 26 countries established to facilitate the development of broadcasting and to exchange information on the latest developments in broadcasting, among other activities.
The two-day meeting will discuss how to make news more qualitative and effective through the use of new technologies and equipments and share experiences among the members.
In the meeting, representatives of national broadcasters of 19 countries, including Nepal Television, are taking part.
On the occasion, Minister for Information and Communication Agni Prasad Sapkota said the government has been guaranteeing press freedom for the professional development of television medium. He expressed hope that the meeting will help formulate a long-term policy in the broadcasting sector.
Chairperson of ABU News Group Pratanna Nunturpun said a policy has to be formulated regarding security of correspondents involved in disseminating news of several parts of Asia.
