VISA DRIVE FOR NEPALIS IN HONG KONG

Kathmandu,3 Aug 3: Various organizations have started a year-long signature campaign to press the Hong Kong government to start issuing visa for Nepali workers there, Purna Basnet writes in Republica from Hong Kong.

The organizations have been pressing the Nepal and Hong Kong governments to hold ministerial-level talks for the purpose, said the organizers.
Various organizations like Asian Migrant Center, Coalition for Migrant Rights, Federation of Asian Domestic Workers and UN women´s mission have been supporting the Far East Overseas Nepali Association (FEONA) and the Union of Nepali Domestic Workers in Hong Kong in this campaign. These organizations, one-and-a- half month ago, had demanded that the Hong Kong government implement Convention 181 related to domestic workers which was passed by the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva.

“The signatures to be collected from Asian countries and Nepal within next five months will be submitted to both the Nepal and Hong Kong governments,” said Ganga Khatiwada, president of FEONA, adding, “We believe that this campaign will help pave the way for ministerial level meeting.”

According to Chuni Thapa, president of Union of Nepali Domestic Workers in Hong Kong, there will be Nepali overseas workers´ conference and interaction program between Nepali and Non-Nepali communities during the one-year campaign.

Around six hundred Nepali domestic workers are currently working in Hong Kong.

Six years ago, people from various eight countries, including Nepal, were barred from employment, visit and study visas in Hong Kong. Efforts to open visa for Nepalis have not been able to yield result in the past. As many as 31,000 Nepalis with Hong Kong identity cards have not been able to invite their relatives due to the visa ban.

The Hong Kong government has said that it would ease visa for Nepalis only if they stop staying illegally there.
