PARLIAMENT SCHEDULED TO MEET SUNDAY AMID OPPOSITION THREAT TO OBSTRUCT IT
Kathmandu, 22 Jan.: Parliament session which has been disrupted consecutively by two largest opposition parties NC and UML
protesting a government and Maoist decision to legalize and register seized assets during a 10-year Maoist insurgency is scheduled
to meet again Sunday.
The opposition parties have threatened to disrupt legislative proceedings until government and Maoists leading the
government correct the 12 January decision and provide details of the government decision in parliament.
Deputy Prime Minister opposed the government and Maoist decision Saturday immediately after returning from India and denied knowledge of the cabinet decision.
Speaker Subash Nemwang Friday also asked Prime Minister
Baburam Bhattrai to give a statement in parliament regarding the decision to run parliament smoothly.
Meanwhile the premier denied in Chitwan Saturday the
decision violated the interim constitution and prevailing laws and acts.
Bhattarai was speaking at a function to mourn the death of party leader Bhakta Bahadur Shrestha.
The government chief, who is also party vice-chairman, asked parties not to politicize the issue and sit down for
a dialogue with government.
“We are resolute in our decision to legalise land transactions carried out by People’s Government during the period of People’s War, and the oppositions instead of supporting our pro-people agendas, are creating hassles
inside the House,: Party Chief Prachanda said while addressing the
same meeting.
“Legalising the transactions of the land during the insurgency is just a dream of the Maoist that would never be fulfilled. We are not scared of insurgency anymore. If they want to go back into hiding we would not stop them,” NC President Sushil Koirala said.
Politics is once again polarizing at they got together four months ago to conclude a peace process and promulgate a delayed constitution.
