Farcical police raid led by IGP

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Casino management got Nepali customers out of gambling dens after receiving a tip off of raids from local police, Kedar Ojha reports in Kantipur.
“We got information 30 minutes before the raid,” a floor manager of one casino told Kantipur.
Nepal Police IGP Om Bikram Rana and five AIGs Monday night conducted sudden inspections of dance bars and casinos.
They conducted separate inspections for three hours.
Most restaurants had closedown at 11 in the night and no Nepalis were founding casinos.

Two alleged suspects handed over by Nepal to India not involved in Mumbai serial blasts

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: In a major embarrassment for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), a Mumbai court on Monday established that two people it as nabbed in Nepal last week were not the accused in the March1993 serial bomb blasts in the city, The Himalayan Times reports quoting Indo-Asian News Service from Mumbai.
Special Judge UD Mulla of the designated court under Terrorists Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act, also ordered the CBI to send back the arrested duo- Slim Abdul Ghani Ghazi alias Ashfaq Ahmed Shah and Riyaz Khatri—to Nepal.
The two are Ashfaq Ahmed instead of Ashfaq Ahmed Shah and Riyaz Lone instead of Riyaz Khatri.

Nepal, India accord to bring Kosi back to original course; other details

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Officials from Nepal and India have agreed to reconstruct the breached Saptakoshi river dam spurs and bring the river back to its original course, Somnath Bastola reports in The Himalayan Times reports from Itahari.
According to deputy director general of waterborne disaster control department Khom Raj Dahal, the agreement was reached to tame the Koshi course back to its original course by June next year.
An Indian high level technical tem led by LP Singh, director of the Ganga Flood Control Committee, was in Itahari for the talks.
Dahal and deputy director general of the irrigation department Anil Pokhrel represented Nepal in the talks.
The Indian team has agreed to start work soon.
Deputy leader of Rashtriya Janata Dal in Lok Sabha Debendra Prasad Yadav has demanded a top judicial inquiry into the collapse of the Kosi embankment causing suffering to millions of people in Nepal and Bihar, Bharat Jarghanagar reports from Lahan in Kantipur.
Yadav said this after an inspection visit.
“If the judicial inquiry finds responsibility, the Indian government has to be completely accountable. Nobody can play around with the lives of 3.6 million people of Nepal and India,” Yadav said.
“Indian government should take moral responsibility for the dam burst before the project term was completed,” he said.

Maoists abandon demand for end to Gurkha recruitment

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Reminiscent of a CPN-UML vote-face when the party was elected for the first time under Man Mohan Adhikari in the early 1990’s, Maoist Deputy Commander Barsha Man Pun ‘Ananta’ also in a sudden departure after CPN (Maoist) captured Singha Durbar said Gorkha recruitment into Indian and British armies won’t be ended.
He said this Tuesday at a programme organized by Nepal Ex-servicemen Organization in the capital.
‘There’s no immediate plan to stop Gurkha recruitment centers,” he said even though it was in their election manifesto.
“Recruitment won’t be immediately stopped. It will be stopped after honourable employment opportunities at home.” Pun said.
The Association in a memorandum to Pushpa KamalDahal Prachanda Friday asked the prime minister to be silent on the issue in talks with Indian leaders during his India visit scheduled for next week.
Ananta also revealed the Gurkha issue is not on the visit’s agenda.

New responsibilities allocated in CPN-UML

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: New responsibilities have been allocated in the CPN-UML by the central committee.
Chief of the publicity department Ishwar Pokhrel has been appointed coordinator for the western region while Pashupati Cholagain has been appointed Bagmati anchal in-charge.
Raghiji Pant heads the social service department and Yubaraj Karki has been appointed chief of the public relations department.
Surendra Pandey is chief of the parliamentary division and Bidya Bhandari, widow of Madan Bhandari, has been given responsibility of the women department.

Youth Force illegal: Madhav Kumar Nepal

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: Former CPN-UML general secretary and chief of the foreign department Madhav Kumar Nepal said Tuesday the party’s Youth Force and such organizations of other parties should be disbanded, Nepal Samacharpatra reports.
He field activities of such organizations by taking law into hand was illegal.
“What will happen to the state with the creation of the YCL, Youth Force or other such groups?” he asked and added such organizations should be disbanded instead of expanding them.
Youth Force was formed BY CPN-UML after the appointment of Jhalanath Khanal to succeed Nepal and Nepali Congress has also launched Nepal Tarun Dal.

Rush to transfer land; officials surprised

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: There’s been a rush to transfer land at offices at the concerned government offices in the Valley in the last few days following the formation of the new government, Dipak Dahal reports in Nepal Samacharpatra.
The rush coincides with the Moist takeover of the government along with the ministry of land reforms; Maoists have called for revolutionary land reforms.
Rumours have started floating government will stop land registration.
The rush peaked Tuesday one day before government’s scheduled announcement of of its policies and programmes.

Dollar crosses Rs 72

Kathmandu, 10 Sept: The dollar for the first time in recent years crossed the Rs 72 mark as it continued to gain in the Nepalese money market.
Nepal Rashtra Bank fixed Wednesday’s buying rate at Rs 72.08 to one dollar.
