Crucial Maoist politburo meet

Kathmandu, 15 June: Maoists began a crucial politburo meet Tuesday to approve modalities for the integration of 19, 000 plus Maoist combatants and implementing the peace process.
The modalities are being presented by Chairman Prachanda for approval as directed by the standing committee.
Ruling parties are demanding Maoist plan for integration and resettlement as a pre-condition for the establishment of a national unity government to replace the year-old government of Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal.
The politburo meet was delayed by one day.
A section in the main opposition is pushing for an alternate candidate as prime minister to head a unity government although party officials earlier backed the chairman for the post.

15 parties ask govt. to call parliament session

Kathmandu, 15 June: Fifteen parties supporting the government, excluding the UML and NC, Monday asked Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal to convene parliament 24 June and present the government’s policies and programmes five days later on 29 June.
PM Nepal convened the meet as the budget session has been delayed.
President DrRaam Baran Yadav was originally scheduled to present the government’s policies and programmes at the legislature Monday 15 June.
Speaker Subash Nemwang Monday asked Maoist Chief Prachanda and UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal to come to a consensus for the legislature’s meet.
He earlier met PM Nepal and NC Acting President Sushil Koirala to come to a consensus by implementing the 28 May tripartite agreement that extended the constituent assembly by one year until 28 May 2011.

Sujata Koirala flying for New Delhi Tuesday

Kathmandu, 15 June: Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sujata is flying for New Delhi for personal and official consultations with Indian party and government officials.
Meetings with Foreign Minister SM Krishna and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao have been scheduled.
She’s going to New Delhi for the first time after the death of her father Girija Prasad Koirala.
She has sought meetings with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress Chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
The Indian capital is a regular pilgrimage site for Nepal’s political leaders especially during periods of crisis in the country.
Indian Ambassador Rakesh Sood also flies for New Delhi Tuesday for consultations as the annual budget session has been delayed.
A prolonged political deadlock continues even after the 28 May tripartite accord to extend the constituent assembly session by one year until 28 May 2011.

Another shooting incident in Dhanusha

Kathmandu, 15 June: Journalist Mohan Gole escaped unhurt when he was shot at in Hariharpur in Dhanusha Monday in another shooting incident in the district.
A policeman pillion riding on Gole’s motorcycle also escaped unhurt.
Four persons, including a government employee and a child, have been killed in every day shootings in the last six days in the district.

10 Indian Maoists killed

Kathmandu, 15 June: Indian security forces have killed 10 Maoists in a huge operation to clear rebel stronghold in the east of the country that involved about 2,000 men, police said on Monday, according to a AFP report from Patna.
One paramilitary policeman was also killed in the fighting, which began late Sunday and raged for 18 hours in Jharkhand, a heavily forested state that lies in the “Red Corridor” of Maoist-controlled territory in eastern India,
Local police superintendent Akhilesh Jha said that at least 10 Maoists had been killed, ‘maybe more’.
A stash of mines, materials for explosives and food supplies were also recovered at one camp.

NC general convention against being rescheduled

Kathmandu, 16 June: The 12th general convention of Nepali Congress that was to be held at the end of August is being rescheduled, Nagarik reports.
A discussion of party officials was held Monday at the residence of Acting President Sushil Koirala; at the meeting, party officials the scheduled meeting can’t be held during the monsoon.
