UML POLITBURO MEETS AMID PARTY RIFT

UML POLITBURO MEETS SUNDAY

Kathmandu, 22 May: The politburo of the UML leading the majority communist government meets Sunday ahead of a central committee meeting.
The meetings were scheduled before Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal flew for Turkey for his first foreign trip to lead the Nepali team to a conference of least developed countries,
The meet coincides with a deepening rift in the party where calls have been made for the resignation of Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal.
Khanal, who is the also party chairman, has been charged by an influential section led by former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and KP Sharma Oli for defying party directives to award the home ministry to Maoists.
Nepal/Oli faction is pushing closer ties with main opposition NC for a national government.
The review of the work of the three-month Khanal government, extension of the constituent assembly tenure and other current issues will be taken up.
