MORE DETAILS OF GOVT. WITHDRAWAL OF AMENDENT BILL

FURTHER DETAILS OF GOVT, DECISION TO WITHDRAW INTERIM CONSTITUTION

Kathmandu, 18 Nov.: Before the cabinet decision to withdraw the government bill to amend the interim constitution, Maoist
standing committee also decided to withdraw the bill.
The move came in the party leading the government
Amid protests to form and empower the expert group.
A caucus of janajatis or indigenous lawmakers from different parties united and registered a protest notice against the 11th amendment to the interim constitution to facilitate for formation of an expert panel to suggest a federal structure.
Without withdrawing the amendment bill, the legislation would have been defeated without a two-third majority required in the legislature.
A vote would have split the UCPN (Maoist) and UML.
The government saved itself an embarrassment with the withdrawal of the bill.
