BIG THREE SUMMIT

THREE PARTY SUMMIT

Kathmandu, 25 May: The Big Three-Maoists, UML, NC and UML are holding summit talks Wednesday as only three days remain to promulgate a constitution 28 May—a deadline that won’t be met for the second time in one year.
Uncertainty prevails.
UML has called for government change to form a national government.
Opposition for the fourth day Wednesday is likely obstruct the presentation of a government-sponsored bill to amend article 64 in an interim constitution to extend the constituent assembly (CA)session by one more year after 28 May.
Ruling parties Maoists and UML are holding bilateral talks ahead of the tripartite dialogue to break a political stalemate.

FIVE AIGs IN FIVE DEVELOPMENT
REGIONS

Kathmandu, 25 May: Nepal Police Tuesday appointed five AIGs to five development regions ahead of 28 May—the deadline to proclaim a constitution which won’t be met.
Kiran Gautam has been signed to the eastern region, Prakash Kunwar to the mid-West, Kalyan Kumar Timshina to the central region, Naresh Gurung to the West and Madan Bahadur Khadka to the far-West.

DANISH ASSIST

Kathmandu, 25 May: Denmark Tuesday extended Rs 948.5 million for the third phase of Nepal Peace Support Programme.
The money will be equally divided for the Nepal Peace Trust Fund and United Nations Peace Fund for Nepal- a donor trust fund for areas of the peace process.
Five EU member states are funding the Trust.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL PRESSURE ON GOVT.

Kathmandu, 25 May: Amnesty International, International Commission of Jurists and Human Rights Watch in a joint letter to Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal Tuesday said cases for rights abuses during the Maoist people’s war should be pursued.
“Politically motivated withdrawal of cases would constitute breach of the government’s obligations under international law which prohibits de facto and de jure amnesties for crimes under international law including gross human rights violations..
‘The appointment of Sapkot [Agni] a member of the politburo of the Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) while he is under police investigation sends a strong signal of government indifference to such serious allegations and reinforces the culture of impunity in Nepl,” the etter said.

5 TONS GARBAGE LIFTED FROM MOUNT EVEREST

Kathmandu, 25 May: Saving Everest 2011—an expedition supported by Everest Summiteers Association and Eco Himal Carlsberg, has lifted five tons of garbage abandoned by expeditions on the 8848 meters world’s tallest peak this spring.
“The team has so far collected about five tons of garbage from areas south col and south summit,” an announcement said.
The col is situated at 7920 meters while the south summit is at 8750 meters.
