Violence continues; govt. determined to hold elections

Kathmandu, 5 April: Violence continued Saturday ahead of the 10 April constituency assembly polls as US embassy said it supports peaceful elections.
The statement made no mention of widespread violence indicating it wanted the vote despite the violence apparently unconcerned with blood spilt to hold the vote.
Washington and India, coordinating Nepal policy, are pushing election at any cost.
The government’s undeclared intention appears to be to conduct the vote even with the deployment of the army and hold re-poll in disturbed constituencies.
Sher Bahadur Deuba repeated Saturday the army will be deployed if Maoists foil elections through violence.
But Chairman Prachanda said India and USA, using international monitors, were conspiring to defeat Maoists in the vote.
Nearly half a dozen Congress and three policemen were injured near Kawasaki, Nawalparasi, in a Maoist attack and obstruction of a rally that was to be addressed by Peace Minister Ram Chandra Paudel, Congress said.
Nine motorcycles and a candidate’s jeep were damaged.
A CPN-UML candidate was injured in another Maoist attack in Accham.
Ten CPN-UML workers injured in another Maoist attack in Lamgung.
A Congress activist was injured in a Maoist attack in Solokhumbu.
Election Commission Saturday directed security officials of three security agencies to reinforce security for the election.
Two persons were injured in Mohottari overnight at a home where bombs were being manufactured.
Police and armed rebels of a tarai group clashed in two districts in the south Saturday.
A group against elections forced a strike in mid and central tarai disrupting normal life Saturday.

Bombs explode in front of army facility

Kathmandu, 5 April: In the second successive bombings in the Valley in two days, nobody was injured when two pipe bombs were set off
in front of the army officers’ club Saturday afternoon in the capital.
One suspect has been handed by the army to the police.
Four bombs were set off Friday in front of a Maoist office in the capital and near the UN office in Lalitpur across the Bagmati river.
Bombs were exploded to create fear and spread panic.
